Exclusive: SRK's Kiss Of Life!

It's an old industry norm that actors comfortably push 40 while the women just keep getting younger. These days, most leading pairs have an age gap of nearly two decades.

Interestingly, what is often sold as 'awesome chemistry' is nothing but a clever packaging of a fresh pair. Point in case is Shah Rukh Khan who seems to be following the legendary Dev Anand's footsteps.

SRK has not only paired up with new and younger faces almost every year, he has also given Bollywood some of its box office queens. And now it's Sonam Kapoor's turn.

If reports are to be believed, Sonam has been signed opposite King Khan in Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Whatever be the fate of the film, this announcement will surely improve Sonam's bargaining power with other producers – given that Deepika Padukone is walking away with most of the plum projects in town.

Kajol

Tanuja's elder daughter made a disastrous debut in Rahul Rawail's Bekhudi. She might have shown sparks of natural spontaneity but a low glam quotient left both viewers and producers cold.

Abbas-Mustan's desi take on A Kiss Before Dying - Baazigar was a SRK show all along. But Kajol complimented his energy levels in the Ye Kali Kali Aankhein number & did some timely damage control. And with DDLJ the couple redefined onscreen chemistry.

Agreed Kajol and SRK have an unmistakable spark, but it's Khan's advances that make Mrs Devgan's responses look good - on screen of course.

Even post-marriage Kajol was wise enough to star opposite SRK in K3G, even though she had to share screen space with 3 generations of superstars. At least SRK film ensures all the Best Actress awards. Her follow up Fanaa was a hit, but not quite same

Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri doesn't exactly fit into the list, since she was already an established star before SRK made his debut. But post Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Mads went through a prolonged slump in her career till Dil To Pagal Hai happened.

SRK and Madhuri had done Anjaam and Koyla earlier but they weren't trademark Khan movies. Despite Karisma's strong role, Shah Rukh's by-then-famous DDLJsque dialogue delivery gave freshness to his pairing with Madhuri.

Dixit's other big role in the new millennium was another SRK starrer Devdas. And while Paro won the accolades, Chandramukhi held her own, bagging all the Best Supporting Actress Awards.

Recently, there were rumours about the Chopra camp planning another film with Dixit. Unlike Aaja Nachle this time with a strong hero. Any guesses about who's being roped in?

Rani Mukherji

After Kajol perhaps Rani has benefited the most from the SRK clique. Who would have thought, the girl who debuted in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat would reach the peak of stardom? Rani's second film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai gave her career a new lease of life.

But she followed it up with a series of forgettable films with Govinda. Destiny took a turn with Chalte Chalte where she replaced Aishwarya at the last minute. Khan's home production had an A-grade setup and she has never looked back since then.

That film gave her an all new look and her unconventional voice was suddenly s.e.xy. KANK, Paheli, Veer Zaara and guest appearances in other SRK starrers catapulted Rani to the top spot.

According to tabloid reports, Rani is also expected to make a cameo in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The battle of the old and new jodis will be interesting to watch.

Preity Zinta

Which brings us to this dimpled beauty. Zinta debuted with Khan in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se and made an impression in her two-bit role – especially in the Jiya Jale number. But save for Dil Chahta Hai, Preity didn't have any landmark films to her credit.

Like Rani, destiny played its card and she replaced Kareena in Kal Ho Naa Ho. It had everything — an author backed role, Karan Johar's marketing, chartbusters and a death scene with SRK. Nothing could go wrong and it didn't.

Preity swept all the awards and became a permanent Bollywood A-lister. In fact she has found little success with other actors and with Khan moving on to younger faces, her date diary is suddenly screaming available.

Sushmita Sen

Perhaps Sen's Bollywood innings will always be remembered for her s.e.xy teacher act in Main Hoon Naa. Quite an unusual casting, SRK and Sen shared a rare sensual chemistry that was unlike his sugar coated NRI romances.

Looked like SRK had finally met his match, as Sen was no nubile nymphet waiting to be swooned by his Raj and Rahul avatars.

But the two have apparently had a fall out over her refusing the OSO special appearance and we might not get to see this pair again. No prizes for guessing who the loser is!

Aishwarya Rai

Though the debate over Ash's acting skills is still on and most of her recent hits have been with Hrithik Roshan, Ash did become a Shah Rukh favourite for a brief period.

During Ash's slump after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, her three projects with Khan - Josh, Mohabbatein and Devdas - helped her stay afloat. What's more? She even did a guest appearance in the delayed SRK starrer Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam.

If you want to sample the SRK-Ash bonding during the good old days, just watch the videos of their Cannes visit. Incidentally, the SRK-Ash starrer Mohabbatein was also the film which brought Big B back in the reckoning.

Kareena Kapoor

Khan's attempt at recreating history misfired big time in Asoka. But as Kaurwaki, Kareena Kapoor's acting skills came to the fore for the first time.

But despite all the praise she won for her sensuous period costumes & smoldering screen presence, the film tanked. Asoka helped Kareena bag other roles of substance in films like Dev & Chameli, but she made the big bl*nder of rejecting Kal Ho Naa Ho.

The rift with Karan Johar meant the SRK camp was out of bounds. Kareena left her snooty days behind and slowly tried to make amends with all her enemies. She was rewarded with a item song in Don which was at least more talked about than her films.

Now with Saif in her life, all is forgiven and we can expect some major announcement in the coming weeks. For starters she is giving company to SRK (Best Actor for Chak De! India) on stage at the awards by bagging the Best Actress trophy.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka has only done one film with SRK but Don remains her calling card in the industry. Even a year after its release she performs on Aaj Ki Raat at every event and continues to play up the sporty image she got from the film.

And thanks to her association with SRK, Priyanka bagged the plum Tag Heuer endorsement (ironically replacing Sush) and has even made an entry into the Karan Johar's stable.

Deepika Padukone

With a face like that, it was just a matter of time before Deepika would be picked up by a top notch production house. But nothing could be bigger than a Shah Rukh Khan home production directed by Farah Khan.

Khan knew he had to move beyond Rani and Preity, while Deepika was also aware of the benefits of being an SRK heroine.

Deepika got a dream launch and with the film taking marketing hype to a new level, she was proclaimed a star even before OSO released. And if you thought her acting was nothing to write home about, no one cares.

Khan can even make a lamppost look like the talking point of the season. But with reports of bitterness between Deepika and Red Chillies we will have to wait and watch what course this equation will take
